The creation and performance of contemporary art music is at the core of the Master of Music in Composition. Through the use of state-of-the-art technology, you advance your music presentation skills in professional and competitive venues. Featuring world-class faculty, extensive performance opportunities through Shenandoah’s two new music ensembles, orchestra and wind ensemble, and regular guest artists (including one Pulitzer Prize-winning composer each year), Shenandoah boasts one of the most exciting and active composition programs in the Capital Region.

The Master of Music in Composition curriculum is designed to enhance the skills of the composer of serious art music, preparing you for professional work in composition or for continued study. Your creative skills are guided and developed through intense study in and the practical application of 20th century art music (but the curriculum does not include work in popular idioms or jazz).

You will learn:

• a variety of techniques in the composition of original music 

• knowledge of music theory and music history

• to employ technology and demonstrate knowledge of technological resources

• the ability to research and write
